Day 2 (9 Jun): Li Chi Kok 荔枝角 June 15, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — jaclynthang @ 3:14 AM

It was a pretty gloomy Saturday morning, but that didn’t deter us from planning our next big shopping trip – to Li Chi Kok 荔枝角, where there are LOADS and LOADS of wholesale shopping for clothes and bags and shoes… basically a woman can go crazy there. We’ve heard loads from friends who bought 11 bags and more shoes there.. so we were pretty upbeat about finding good deals too!

Before attempting Li Chi Kok. we’d better fill our stomachs first as there’s hardly any food at Li Chi Kok. So we head off to Sham Shui Po again (which is enroute to Li Chi Kok anyways) and had the famous 维记咖啡粉面 – which is actually beef broth noodles though. It’s supposedly pretty good so we decided to give it a try.

Verdict: It was not too bad. The beef broth wasn’t too overpowering and the noodles are nice and Q. Pretty reasonably priced actually so it’s a good breakfast.

By the time we stepped out of Li Chi Kok station, we were rather clueless about where it is. According to Peiying’s Tripadvisor App, we should take Exit C, make a U-turn and walk about 10 m. We will see the sign. True enough, we arrived at the Hong Kong Industrial Centre – aka Shrine of Shopping.

Ahh… and we generally went MAD there. We were so busy that we didn’t take ANY photos. Just shopped and shopped and shopped – jostling with the Saturday crowd. We arrived at about 11am and only came to our senses when it was about 2pm. We continued shopping until about 3 pm before realizing that we hadn’t drunk a drop of water, nor eaten anything.. and we were actually rather tired after all that madness. That was when we went upstairs for a break. Amazing right… must be the adrenalin rush of shopping. Now it’s no longer productive to shop when you’re tired as you basically don’t look carefully. So we decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel to dump our loot.

After resting a bit till about 3.30 pm, we headed out again to Tsim Sa Tsui to do something more touristy – we can’t just shop and eat right? Of course we had to settle our lunch first – and where else but to head off to 新记猪颈肉芝士捞面. Just to save our stomachs for the next meal, we decided to share the cheese noodles – and goodness… this is a FANTASTIC dish… for those who love cheese that is. Good thing Peiying and I are absolute fans of cheese and had no trouble polishing it off.

Ok to get there is a little complicated. We asked the7-11 counter lady nearby who replied us irritably to go just turn into the entrance just around and head straight in. To save others the trouble, here’s how to get in:

This is what you’ll see at the outside:

Walk in and you’ll come by this:

Continue along and you’ll see the shop that looks a little shady:

It tastes really good – so who cares!

Anyway, after that we head off to the Walk of the Stars – and while walking halfway it rained on us and we had to take cover at the nearest shopping centre.

We even stayed for the 8pm light show! It lasted for about 15 minutes though and all aroud us were PRCs trying to get a glimpse of the light show too.

It was rather late by the time we got back to the hotel so we decided to just settle dinner nearby – at the 1 star Michelin restaurant 新斗记 at our backyard, near Jordan MTR Exit B2. Good thing we checked out their opening hours and realized that they are only open from 6pm to 3am. As we turned around our block, we noticed that the road was jam packed with cars – luxury cars to be exact, ranging from BMW to Audi and more. This restaurant is so popular that they had to provide valet parking. Hmm..

Here’s a map to show it’s location in Jordan

Anyway it was a good thing that it’s about 9pm at night (another odd time for dinner) and we again sailed in very quickly without much of a wait. And since this restaurant is famous for its roast meat – especially the roast pork, we ONLY ordered the roast pork. 1 portion (not even 1/4 of a pork). The waiter was flabbergasted and went “Zhao Gam?!” which means “That’s all?!” and Peiying went “Zhao Gam”. He couldn’t believe it and repeated his question, and Peiying cooly repeated her reply. I was like… what happened? (I don’t understand cantonese). It was HELL OF A LONG WAIT before the roast pork dish came. Not too sure to say if it’s worth the wait and worth the price – but it’s truly good.

The skin was light and crispy – not oily and the meat beneath was succulent and juicy. Lightly flavoured with salt and pepper. Delicacy truly. But we were treated obnoxiously by the waiter who served another couple who came in later first. I looked in askance and he replied rather rudely “wait in turn”. I guess they were rather pissed off with the fact that we only ordered ONE dish, ate up, paid up and bolted out after that. It was rather pricey though.
